The doctors say Cathy passed out in the middle of the road due to a caffeine overdose from drinking too many energy shots and energy drinks. While she did drink a lot of caffeine laced drinks to cram for the finals, she remembers a different story. One with a beast that attacked her; now she's noticing physical and mental changes.  Monsters don't really exist so the only rational explanation is that she's going insane...right?
